Emma Manalac: Week 2 (July 5- July 9)

I was told that the proposals I submitted wouldn’t sell to the audience except for those about fiestas. I had a hard time imagining what to pitch so I decided to watch Unang Hirit. They featured things like giant siopao and wonder plants. My internship at GMA was just about office work but I felt so exhausted thinking while I sat down in front of my laptop. I placed an ad on my facebook account asking my friends to help me think of a topic. Because of this, I was able to make Unang Hirit feature the UP Pep Squad whose publicity head messaged me and asked my help for publicity. I felt so proud!

Later on, my former classmate who just graduated last March came! Paula Lim was already a Segment producer for Unang Hirit. Finally, I had someone I could talk to. She told me stories about the nature of the work there. I realized that I wasn’t a Production Assistant; I was a researcher. If I were employed to work as a researcher, I would be earning P14,000 a month and I worked hard I would be promoted as a segment producer and earn P20,000 a month. I was a researcher!

Finally people were talking to me. I felt needed! Aside from submitting proposals to Ate Shelly, I was asked to collect different articles about SLEX. Another segment producer, asked for my help to trace down Django Bustamante for their episode. Luckily by calling random numbers posted in the internet, I was able to contact his manager. Milestone! But I only realized the gravity of the work of a segment producer when I was asked to help her look for a piggy bank collector for their episode. Seriously, who collects piggy banks? Another segment producer was on the brink of crying because she only had 7 hours to find a story for their 4am show. Most of the segment producers didn't have a researcher. I felt so happy when they went to me asking for the things I had in mind for their episodes. Oddly, I was also asked to talent for another public affairs show. I was asked to eat cotton candy in front of a camera. Thankfully they just zoomed in my mouth because the last thing I wanted was to be seen on TV!

Finally today, I felt that all my efforts were put to good use. I felt that I had something to contribute to a network as big as GMA.

On the other hand, this week, my DZUP internship ended. I will really miss writing for Trivia Ten (though it took me 2 hours to write one script)! I had a lot of fun attending the episode recording too because it felt so fulfilling to see my fellow interns do a great job as hosts.
