Week of Engagement

My 3rd week in Weber was quite something I'll never forget. I felt so important when my boss called me into his office to join him and one of Weber Shandwick's Accounts Associate for a brainstorming session last Tuesday. I wracked my brains up for something big to meet the needs of one of Weber Shandwick's clients. I felt so important since they actually considered my ideas for an event that they will organize for their esteemed client.

Brainstorming is really needed when you want to come up with a big idea. I realized that it’s so much better when you’re always in the know and when you’re well read. It pays to have an events management background as well as I was able to suggest an event concept for a specific public.

I really like how they make us feel important in Weber Shandwick. On Monday, we're actually going to Bb. Pilipinas send off. In preparation, they let us cut name tags for the press.

I felt so good since our superiors value our contributions to the company. We did a pitch last Friday and brainstormed with the directors. But the highlight of it all was when Weber Shandwick's President and CEO, Atty. Mike Toledo, introduced himself to us interns.

I was flabbergasted as he shook hands with me. He's so much of a man being a lawyer, journalist, media personality, legal and financial consultant of private companies and government-owned corporations, and being a former Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson during the Estrada administration.

He called us to his office and made time to get to know us. He shared a few things about himself and his colleagues that came from our very own College of Mass Communications. I was so astonished coz he simply commands attention. You're drawn to listen to him coz he simply has this different quality in his character.

He treated us to dinner in Barcino, Greenbelt to formally welcome us to Weber Shandwick. To keep us company, Sir Luigi (Director for Operations) was also there with us. I deeply appreciated their getting to know us. We ate good food and drank wine while talking about UP (since Atty. Mike's from UP also). He joked a lot and shared a lot of things about school and about life and I thought to myself, wow, this is rubbing elbows with Weber Shandwick’s President and CEO.

The interns in Barcino, with Atty. Mike Toledo (In white) and Sir Luigi Avancena (In grey)

Although it occurred to me that the whole thing was PR itself, I didn't mind. I realized how it served as a blueprint of how they actually get clients. They get to know them and their needs, engage and build relationships with them by communicating well with them and creating bonds thereby giving them utmost importance.

L-R: Sir Luigi, Nina, Kara, Atty. Mike and I

I really enjoyed the experience. It’s definitely worthwhile and unforgettable.

week 6 internship

TV Internship
Anyway, puro research ako this week.

2nd Week of Internship

DZUP: SONA 2010

I was tasked to be a photojournalist for SONA 2010. I really enjoyed my job!!! I didn't go inside. I like the event outside Batasan better :) I was surprised at how friendly everyone was, and they all allowed me to take pictures of them.

I conclude... that Filipinos are indeed vain. HAHA

AT HALATA NAMAN TALAGA NA NAG ENJOY AKO SA SONA :)) ang dami kong nagawa eh.. hahaha!

1st week of internship (July 22, 2010)

I'm in the Right Place :)

This week I finally started with my internship in Living Asia. The place and the people were not what I expected! Whenever I thought of broadcast network offices I imagined people always moving, looking very stressed and pressured, wearing corporate clothes and all- I imagined the boss to be very, well... bossy. haha! But when I got there, everyone was so welcoming and warm. They looked very relaxed and the best thing (for me) is that they weren't in corporate clothes at all! :D

The office is quite small, with cubicles dividing the work places. I accompanied one of the videographers/directors while he was making a shot list of his videos of Macau. It was fun to watch a raw travel video because you get a sneak peek of how they do it. I also saw how much fun they were having while they were in Macau. He told me stories of his travels and gave me tips on how to video on location. He also shared a little about his background. He graduated from UP College of Fine Arts, major in Viscomm. I asked him why he's not into advertising since most of the Viscomm majors I know usually end there; and he gave me the best and most refreshing answer: "I have nothing against advertising. It's just that, personally, I feel that I can create more in travel videography". I was really touched by his answer! I've always had reluctance with capitalism, and labor without heart (although sometimes it's not really their fault). It was just really nice to hear someone say that he's where he is now because that's where he can create more, and that's where he really wanted to be. And that's when I realized I'm in the right place- traveling, happy shiny people, passion instead of labor. I wish I get to say what he said when I'm already working as well :)

p.s. this was supposed to be my 1st blog (July 22, 2010), kaso hindi pala siya napublish sa internship is love :| ang hirap mag blogger ah?! haha!

THROUGH THE LENS

My 1st Week at DZUP
July 26, 2010

I was tasked to be a photojournalist of the People’s SONA. I walked from UP to Ever-Gotesco to capture the people’s march. The glazing sun burnt my skin but the experience and shots I took were worth it! It was the real people’s state that NO ONE could ever include in just a speech.
Highlight:
I quote Brian from the LFS.
“Ang pagbabago, hindi yan kusang binibigay ng gobyerno. Iginigiit yan.”

July 29, 2010
I reported at DZUP station. Sir Edge asked me to gather opinions from non-students about the MAY PUNTO KA DYAN topic of the day “the importation of rice by the current administration”. Having lots of friends and contacts helped! I was able to give 7 good responses in 45 minutes and Sir Edge was able to use it. Again, I felt worthy. haha.

Week 3 (Chamy)

This week was a lame week for me. I only went to office for one day = 9 hours. I feel guilty but hey, next next week is normal week for me.

I felt especially busy last Monday because my supervisor, who was neglecting me for the past weeks, finally gave me things to work on. She was always different because she would let me do brainstorming, research, scriptwriting, and even checking if her cosplay mechanics conformed with the standards of DTI. She was different because I was so used to Go Negosyo shoots.

I want to beg her to let me join her travels with connection to the programs she produces, occulars, talking with those popular, shiny people, etcetera. But she wouldn't let me. She just makes sure I have an assignment to take home and promises me that I can direct an episode of her show soon. "I can see that you want to produce" was what she said. "but we're still in the planning stage".

I just don't want to pitch, I want to produce it alright. Besides, her show runs for only 5 minutes and I found out so much that needed change thus making things more interesting for me. Well I hope I can give it a try sooooooon.

the launching of latest from Giorgio Armai's Acqua di Gioia

i must say this is my debut entry for our internship blog. i really don't know what's up with me? like i am almost done with my OJT BUT i can't seem to share anything about it.

It's just that I think its not the OJT i had in mind. From our predecessors, OJT means making coffee for your executive producers or just passing the time, in short not doing anything. V experience had definitely demystified those old folk stories.

Maybe another reason is that I am very much contained on how to recapture the experience. I am soooooo overwhelmed with all the happenings!
But since we are oblige to share it, here's my latest escapade.

Last night was the launch of Giorgio Armani's new scent, "Aqua di Gioia" at the Fort.
It is the latest addition of Giorgio Armani to its line to topple off Dolce and Gabbana's light blue scent. As a segment producer, I interviewed Armani's senior product manager, Jannie Villacorta. According to her, Filipino's want scent which is more citrus, watery and light because it fits our weather. We don't want anything very heavy.
Acqua di Gioia captures that calm and soothing experience.

Our friends from Armani has taken things a little bit unconventional. They had the launch at a Neo Day Spa. Celebs like Gretchen Barreto, Twettie De Leon and even Derek Ramsay frequents the spa. I will show you the pics very soooooon.

Of course it wouldn't be a spa experience without any treatment. So we had ourselves a free hand massage. And i tell you, if you are an intern at V be prepared to gain weight. Oh my. . I must tell you, the Foodies are oh mama mia! I had like macaroons from Bizu and some sort of canopy.
Yum, yum, yum!!!

After the shoot our producer treated us for dinner. we went to a place called, "Terry". I love there sinigang na liempo and leche flan. We spent only like 450 something. It's sooooooo cheap.
Well that's all for now folks.

This friday I've got my final event with V: at ENCORE..

But of course, I will start uncovering all my past events. . .i mean i had usher, f21 and other stuff.

Vavooosh for now :))

It’s a Busy Start

Everybody’s seemed busy in the PR Department of ABS-CBN when I came in for my first day. No orientation or introductions were done. My superior, Sir J who I think is in his mid 20’s, looks like a sensible fun guy. Sir J immediately gave me an assignment to make a press release for Matanglawin’s July 11 episode. Before that, my co-interns and I were given bundles of press releases to review a little bit and analyze the format and style of writing for different programs.

After submitting the material on Matanglawin, Rea and I paired up for a simple article to be posted on e-frequency. e-Frequency is a multi-awarded electronic news letter produced by the ABS-CBN Corporate Communications Division which started in 2008 to boost up the company’s workforce. The article was about the ABS-CBN employees’ views on what rules or laws should P. Noy implement during his term. We conducted MOS on the grounds of the Kapamilya Network and got a variety of answers; some were good and there were some that were a bit unthinkable. J It was quite a time and I did not expect that I’ll be further working on for e-frequency.

Sir K, the boss of my superior, called me to join their meeting one afternoon. After letting me take a seat, the things he was talking about were quite a blur to me. He wanted to cover six different topics and I was surprised that he gave the three to me. He wanted articles on these topics that would be put up in e.

The next day I showed up for internship, I went down at The Loop to get the information I needed for my first article. The process for gathering the data was quite interesting; I had to go food-tripping. With a little word from the Property Management, the food stalls offered me their best-sellers for free tasting. I made a stop for about 20 different food stalls. There were even some that gave out samples of almost their entire menu. I made petty conversations with the owners, managers and a few staff to learn more about their specialties. Halfway through the stalls, I felt my tummy bursting bit by bit, but I couldn’t stop because the food just keeps coming. But there is a greater challenge waiting for me back at the work desk; writing this flavorful experience.

Week 2 (Chamy)

Finally got the hang of the usual office and Go Negosyo shoot feel.

We had a new director last Friday (Direk Jade) and she was obviously more OC and smarter than the previous director (Direk Kring). Direk Jade made the most out of the little sari-sari
store set and I saw her use what Sir Austria has been telling us during class: depth, movement, etcetera. Aside from observing and poking my nose on Direk Jade, I did my routines in helping prepare the idiot boards, setting up and setting down the sari-sari store and helped in raising the PM's blood pressure too. (two times! BUT this is not routine! :P). An extra here and there, and oh, I put on Wowie De Guzman's lapel mic! Wowie and Juday days.

Jem stands in for Ms. Gladys

I make the sari-sari store look real.

There's Direk Jade.

The little things these PMs let us do-such as idiot board preparing-are one by one making sense and are actually starting to give us edge during production classes. An independent production outfit like IM, with only a few people working on it, really teaches us efficiency and productivity. Because there are only few people, we can do more and learn more. The good looking boss/owner is just a bonus.

Its definitely something I look forward to. :)

TV internship (4th week)

I now have a total of 90 hours of TV internship and I can say that I have learned quite a lot not only from the network but also from the experiences of the people who consist it. For this week I lie lowed a bit to give way to my other subjects but I guess the highlight of my week is getting closer with the producers, researchers and production assistants of the show I am working with which is 'The Correspondents'.

I had dinner with one of the researchers of 'The Correspondents' and it is motivating to hear her inspiring stories of why she continues to do this job despite the pressure and stress she was under. She said to me that achieving something that you want is never going to be easy because if it is then it is not worth wanting in the first place. She also told me of her fresh grad job application stories, that there was a point in her life that she was thinking of accepting any job because she hasn't had any luck in getting a job in the media industry, but just on the day that she was finally giving up, she got a call from ABS-CBN and it was truly an answered prayer for her and that was why even though it's hard and stressful, it does not seem as such for her because this is her passion and if you do something that you love then you'll feel like you're not working at all because you're enjoying and she added that that is what's important. Because it will definitely show in your performance and sooner or later people will notice it, and time will come you will get paid higher than what you work for, in a job that you love and what could be more perfect than that.

I really loved this heart to heart talk as she gave me advices for my future career plans. Aside from this talk we also had a lot of laughter in the office, we were really getting close with our executive producer and other staff members of 'The Correspondents'. The atmosphere in the office feels like home and not a stressful workplace at all, and I really admire them for having that. I can really see teamwork rather than competition between the staff members.

I was also happy this week for I saw my name in the credits of our recent episode entitled 'SUPER UOD', this I can say is my first major episode for they really let me be a part of their team and participate in the pre-production and production aspects of the show. :) I really did not gave much attention to credits until I saw my name in it haha! Fulfilling much! lol

Emma Manalac -Week 4 (July 19-23)

This week, I get the validation I need as an intern.
I remember this week the most. Two of my stories are going on air. Another one has been approved and is just waiting for another confirmation.

Dolls. Ate Lei, my favorite segment producer due to the simple fact that she’s very funny, asks me to give her ideas for her segment. The next day, she tells me that the team head likes my story but it still needs to be approved by the other heads. I wish it gets approved!

Banchetto. I overhear segment producers talking about “Banchetto.” That’s my story! That’s one of the first stories I pitched to Ate Shelly. It’s actually airing!

Cheese. Ate Teng talks to me for the first time. “Iha, intern ka diba? Pahanap na naman ng mga restaurant na may iisang theme parang bagoong club na lahat ng luto ay bagoong. At peanut butter house.” Okay. What are the other things that are like peanut butter and bagoong? Cheese! I type cheese and a story appears. There is a cheese restaurant opening at MOA. They are serving 5,000 different kinds of food with cheese, even coffee! There is no contact number. I call the only lead that I have – the organization of a certain club of culinary people. Fast forward, Ate Teng thanks me and invites me to the shoot so I can see the story I pitched.

Two stories airing!

Emma Manalac -Weekd 3 (July 12-July 16)

Today, I give you no interesting information about my internship life.

The usual routine is that I give Ate Shelly topics for the features segment of Unang Hirit.

In the middle of my researching, Kuya Josh asked me to translate the articles from trapik.com in Filipino for the spiels of Love Anuever. It was supposed to be an easy task if not for the traffic and car jargons I did not understand. What was a carburetor? What was it in Filipino?

Paula Lim, my classmate last semester approached me and tells me that she got assigned to do canned features. I gave her some of the things I saw in the internet. I was getting the hang of where to find stories, what to type and which to submit. I discovered that there was a calamansi cake! Paula called me to ask the number of the bakery that sold that. I really hope my story was chosen.

On Wednesday, classes were suspended. Because of last night, which I spent thinking about my thesis topic on a blackout, I decided not to go to my internship. I needed sleep.

WEEK 3

Aside from the videos and articles, GMA NMI also produces Live Chat Productions. It's where online viewers could post and ask questions for the guest artist/s. This is to promote a new show, welcome a new artist, or just for whatever purposes.

Last week, the guests were the young love team Joshua Dionisio and Barbie Forteza from First Time and Pilyang Kerubin. But I wasn't able to experience this production because I had a class that day.

This week, the guests were The Last Prince Stars Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal. Again, I wasn't able to experience it, because I had a class that day. But like the previous Live Chat, I was assigned to make some floor questions for the guest stars. I should be able to produce atleast 20 questions for each star. I immediately thought of all those mushy questions you find in high school autograph books. And the most interesting part, was that you have to invent a username that should appear as if it was from an online subscriber, like aljurandkris_4ever, cutie_pie16, iluvaljur_55, emo_ako_k.

:)
Now I promise that I should experience atleast one Live Chat Productions., because it seems to be fun.

To Basahang Ginto, Danz Showdown and Happiness!

WEEK 2

I feel more comfortable than last week.
The first problem I encountered with the task I have, is that I am not really a fan of the Kapuso Network. I barely watch their shows, but now, since I am assigned to clip videos for variety and dramarama shows, I am forced to watch and get the gist of each episode...And make teasers, that will excite the viewers to watch the clip on their website.

However, above all these complaints running in my mind and all my personal biases, It's weird that I actually find myself LAUGHING and ENJOYING watching the videos. I also feel excited for the next episode; what will happen? will the character of Carla Abellana fall for Geoff Eigenmann in Basahang Ginto? who will be the next sexbomb dancer in Danz Showdown. Funny, isn't it? :)

Better Late Than Never

WEEK 1

(June 16)

I had my first day of internship at GMA New Media. ( I know I'm SOOO LATE!)

For the record, it was so tiring. Ive never had this kind of headache, backache, heartache (haha) since forever.

Anyway, MJ and I arrived on time.

While on our way, we were laughing so hard predicting that our boss will tell us to do stuffs, like welding, lifting, and so much worse things.

But then of course, none of our predictions happened.

First TASK: VIDEO CLIPPING.

Its similar to editing, it’s just that we don’t use the software, we actually prepare the videos for editing. Then after checking, it will be later posted on the official website of GMA; igma. tv. So we clipped videos for 5 hours.

That’s it. J

Short Titles and Descriptions

I had a bit of a heavy workload for my 5th week at GMA NMI. I transcribed 2 interviews and clipped about 30-35 videos of variety and telebabad shows. My clipping went smoothly because I’m already familiar with each show, the cast and the last episodes that have been aired. This week, I have found an easier way of formulating the short titles and descriptions for each show. Haha. It’s funny because it took me 3 weeks to really get a hang of these things. Hehe. Anyway, I figured that to make my work easier, I would just look for the juiciest and striking lines from a certain episode and my titles and descriptions would revolve around it. :))

I also transcribed the press conference of Kaya ng Powers, GMA’s new sitcom and interviews of some of its cast namely Rufa Mae Quinto and Elmo Magalona. I can say that my typing and listening skills were really put to the test this week. I was also able to practice my writing skills in the sense that I always had to think of something new when I write the short titles and descriptions of the said shows. I had to make sure that I was able to summarize the highlights of a certain show and that it will arouse the interest of the audience so that they would go out of their way to check the videos that I clipped.

This week I just realized that no matter how routinary your work gets, you just always have to do your best. \nn/.

The Past is There to Guide You

Week 3

At the Dubbing Station, Sir Jeff taught me how to synch the tapes that were to be used to record on. Synching, as with the patching, is tricky business but once you get the hang of it, it becomes a familiar ritual. Time codes are the most important aspect of editing, be it linear or non-linear because this is the code of the exact frame of every video. It is the words and language of the video material which will be understood by any editing machine. Sir Eric gathered all the interns of the Program Management Department to show us the PowerPoint module they show new employees of the department. Dayna is a Korean from UE taking Mass. Comm. while Lemuel and Jenina are advertising students from PUP. They are assigned to the administrative branch of the department while I am all by my lonesome at the editing branch. Sir Eric then told me to continue my work on My Monster Mom. He told me to add the “My Monster Mom” title card at the beginning of each segment and put the SNBO title card at the end of each segment.

Ma’am Rosyl took me to the Ingest room where they have the tapes digitized for airing. She also let me certify her shows. Certifying tapes means to watch the tapes and check if they are fit for airing. Fit for airing meaning they don’t have defects, blurs, folds, video distortions and the like. There is a name for each sort of distortion and if I spot one, I write down the time code of its appearance. I then decide if the tape is fit to air, with distortions or not. The show that Ma’am Rosyl asked me to certify was Let’s Dance (which was is too exaggerated in its shooting techniques). Right next to me was Sir Jan who was editing One Piece and Detective Conan. I was itching to ask him the whole time to please let me certify Detective Conan, I would have done so with utmost glee. But alas, I did no such thing.
