At the office everyone is facing their own machines. This is of course due to the fact that editing has an inherently individualistic nature, more so in this case since we are linear editors. Despite (or because of) this, the group goes along well so the work environment/dynamic is ok. We sometimes suddenly have a conversation and just as suddenly we go back to editing. This week I basically segmented some more tapes for Sir Rolly... with the occasional chit chat of course.

Editing as Ideological Filter
(5th Week)
Unfortunately for me I had a fever so I only got to go to GMA on Monday. Basically the whole day I segmented Sir Rolly's tapes. The shows he handles are Love City a I Love You. For Love City, I segment them into four parts while for I Love You, I segment them into 3 parts. This amounts to around 4-5 tapes for Monday. Sir Rolly would then insert the Title Cards where I have indicated the possible time gaps. The MTRCB team outside the office is often consulted by the Editing team as to whether or not a certain scene may be shown on air. I Love You is a Korean comedy show but they discuss such subjects as abortion, divorce, pornography and other subjects which, at least for the MTRCB, are sensitive to the Philippine audience. So here is where regulation occurs and decisions are made on the spot. I see then how these handful of people get to set the ideologies for the mass audience, who unknowingly watch a 'filtered' episode. Some scenes are obviously not fit for airing, in the case of the movies they edit for SNBO or other movie specials, such as torrid sex scenes or gore. But when it comes to topics, take abortion for example, it really then relies on the call of the MTRCB representative. But in reality, the topics featured are dealt with sensitivity and actually offer different views on the subject and do not in any way encourage the audience to get abortions or get a divorce. So when they edit it out, we are deprived of getting different views and stuck with one.
Trip to Memory Lane
(4th Week)
This week I got to certify Detective Conan tapes. There's a list of all the correct terms to label each kind of video distortion such as artifact, folding, pixelized etc. Again this is to 'certify' that the tape can be aired. If in case the tape has too many distortions then they would have to re-dub (or re-record the tape). As I am a fan of Detective Conan I didn't mind certifying around 9 tapes with 2 episodes each.

Week 2 at TV5 (Chamy)
This week we had nothing to do at our regular/assigned programs. And so the good staff from Juicy kindly gave us to a staff of House or Not - TV5's newest game show hosted by Joey De Leon. This was probably the busiest day I've had at this station. We literally ran from 1st to 3rd floor, because the elevator was just too damn slow, sat after one task for no more than 10 minutes, then receive a call from an important person who asks us to:
1. Bring the printer down from the 3rd floor to the 1st floor then,
2. Go back to the 3rd floor to get some timer for the games then,
3. Go to the control room (and see some osum monitors and real time directing) and
4. Be asked to go the engineering building outside the studio to process some papers then
5. Go back to the control room because the papers were incomplete
6. You know what else happened.
But during free time I managed to take note about some things:
Set construction took forever because the set was divided into so many parts (since its a game show with obstacle courses). So many lights were put up (including the marquees), and they made sure that not one tiny bit of dirt was seen on cam. It started at around lunch time and the actual shoot started at 5pm. In fairness, it was a pretty decent and cool set, the "set construction took forever" part justified.
Oh and of course, there's no way we're going to miss picture taking with The Man. ( I just can't post them right now, don't know why :| )
Some weird observations:
- This writer, who makes the questions, keeps on panicking about whether he has made enough questions for the segment. I wonder why he never though of making enough to keep him from worrying.
- Some people have the bad habit of cramming - printing scripts, food for the audience, etc. I thought cramming was only passable at school.
- Some people don't know how to say "Thank you"
Looking forward for more days like this. :))

Special Olympics Coverage
24 August 2010
Today Ate Mona and I went to Star Mall to cover an event, the Special Olympics 2010. We interviewed people and took videos of the bowling athletes and their parents who are very supportive. Ate Mona is the one who usually asks questions during the interviews although sometimes she let me do the questioning. The organizers treated us well. They even gave us food and souvenirs. Honestly, I didn’t expect that organizers of any event would treat the media like that. They were so friendly.
When we got back to the studio, Ka Vlad (our production manager) asked me to translate and summarize an article about the history of T-shirt. It’s the first time he asked me a favor so I did my best to impress him. I’m hoping for a positive feedback. :)

“Chryl works like us.”
20 August 2010
Ate Mona (Net25 writer, researcher, and segment producer) told me that so far all of the scripts I have written for Homepage were aired. Kyaaa~! J
Today, I’ve talked with a Homepage writer/researcher. She’s the person who hated me during my first days of internship, or so I think. She explained to me the organization or work distribution in Net 25. She also lent me a leaflet/catalogue about Net25. Contrary to my belief, she’s really nice. She even advised me that if I have questions, I can approach her anytime. Moreover, she told me that I’m different from the other interns because “Chryl works like us.” Maybe, it’s just her being straight-forward that made her look (evil in my eyes…hehe) antagonistic. But in reality, she’s kind. :)
